Description of Research

My research focuses on the mechanics of damage of structural materials subjected to monotonic and fatigue loading that requires working in areas that are at the intersection of mechanics of materials and materials science. In particular, we focus on developing mechanistically based fatigue damage estimation and design procedures in areas involving multiaxial fatigue, rolling contact fatigue, spall propagation, fretting fatigue, and related constitutive and finite element model development for a wide range of structural materials including steel and aluminum alloys, single crystal superalloys and foams. Research involves fundamental applications in several interdisciplinary areas of solid mechanics, fracture mechanics, tribology, and rotor dynamics. Techniques and procedures developed find application in predicting structural integrity and lifing of single crystal turbine blades, hybrid silicon nitride case hardened ball bearings, foams, and shape memory alloy components, with applications in aircraft and space propulsion, power generation, and rotor bearing system design.
