This text on structural optimization has two principal objectives.
The first is to acquaint the student with the state of the art mathematical
methods of optimization. To this end the book presents analytical and numerical
methods ranging from variational techniques to numerical search algorithms.
The second objective of the textbook is to describe the interface the structural
designer has to create between the structural analysis and optimization
software. This includes the development of constraint derivative formulations
and software, the use of constraint approximations, and the choice between
competing formulation of the same design task as an optimization problem.
The additional material in the third edition reflects the rapid pace
of development in the area of structural optimization. The new interest
in methods for discrete or integer problems is reflected in material on
the theory and applications of integer programming techniques. These range
from the well known branch and bound techniques to the new methods of probabilistic
search, such as simulated annealing and genetic algorithms. Applications
focus on the design of composite laminates for increased strength and stiffness.
Chapters 6-8, which describe the interface between structural analysis
and optimization software, have been expanded by about one third, reflecting
new developments in approximation methods and sensitivity techniques.

Offering a thorough treaatment of both
contemporary design optimization techniques and the mechanics of composite
laminates, Design and Optimization of Laminated
Composite Materials broadens engineers' design horizons by providing
them with the information they need to take full advantage of this important
class of composite materials. Intended to serve as an undergraduate-to
graduate-level course text or a professional reference for practicing engineers,
it features a rational, integrated presentation, supplemented with case
examples, practice exercises, and valuable programming tips.
