Every semester, people come to me with problems related to connecting to the share to post the course webpages.  In ALL cases, the solution was right here on this webpage.  Please read this completely!!

There is no way to FTP your webpage to the server.

The below information is intended to help you create and maintain course webpages if the course webpage is located on the Department Web Server.  If the webpage is located anywhere else, these guidelines may not help you at all.Computer

This is some information that we put together so that TA's who are creating and maintaining WebPages for courses being taught will know how to post their work.  As time permits, I'll try to add more details based on questions and comments that I get from the TA's who are doing the course webpage.  It would be a good idea to check back for updates on a regular basis.

Take the time to look at the Webpage Hints page.  This gives you some information about how you should setup your webpage and post your data.

When time permits, we will add some links to this webpage that will give you some good resources to make your WebPages look good.

WARNINGAnimated exclamation markThere are a few important rules that the UF has related to WebPages.

  1. There can be no commercial advertising at all when posting information on a UF website.  If we should find anything like this, we will remove your webpage from the server until you fix the problem.
  2. No copyrighted material may be used or shared on your webpage unless you are licensed to so by the copyrighted owner.  In other words, don't use a program to create your WebPages unless you have a licensed version of that program.
  3. With this in mind, homework solutions from a book are considered to be copyrighted.  If you post copyrighted solutions on your webpage, they MUST BE password protected!!!  No exceptions!!!  We can set this up for you.

To request web space for a course being taught, following the guidelines found on the "Requesting Course We Space" link found on the left column of this screen.

Now that we got that our of the way, here is what you need to know to map your computer to the web space provided to you to use.

Website URL

The first thing you'll need to know is what the URL will be for your website.  The URL follows a pattern as shown below.

http://www.mae.ufl.edu/courses/<Semester>/<Course Number>

Semester will be something like summer2003, spring2003, fall2003
Course Number will be like egm2511, egm3520, egm3401, eml3100

With this in mind, the URL for EGM2511 taught during the Summer 2003 semester would be:

http://www.mae.ufl.edu/courses/summer2003/egm2511

This is the URL that should be put on a syllabus for the course.

IMPORTANT - All Accounts that are setup for course webpages (Student and TA access) will expire 1 week after graduation for the semester they were setup for.  Within 7 days after that, the webpage will be taken off line and kept for 1 year.  After that, the webpage will be deleted.

Mapping the Shared Drive

Computer systemIn order to publish your webpage, you'll need to "Map the Network Drive" on the Department web server.  To do this you will need a username and password to access the space we have allotted for your webpage.  To "Map a Network Drive"  you must do the following.

or Windows 2000 Home
(Windows 98 does not work consistently - See Note Below)

  1. Right click on "My Computer" or "My Network Places".  Either one will work.
  2. Click on "Map Network Drive..." in the menu.  Below is the windows you should get.
  3. In the space labeled "Folder",                    enter \\maeweb\<course>
If you are using a wireless connection,      enter \\128.227.42.51\<course>

Example: \\maeweb\egm2511 (Use the correct course number!!)
  4. Next click on "Connect using a different user name" below the "Folder" box
  5. A new window should open with 2 spaces.  1 for your user name and 1 for your password.

(This is the user name and password that were given to you when the webpage was setup)
  6. When you are done entering the user name and password, click "OK"
  7. You should now be back to the "Map Network Drive" window.
    Click "Finish"
  8. You should now be connected to the network drive.  This is where you will save your webpage work.  A window for this network drive space should open automatically.  If it doesn't, click on "My Computer" and look at the network drives (the one with the line under it) In this example above, the drive letter is Y: and it clearly shows you are connected to "egm2511 on maeweb".
  9. IMPORTANT!! - The first file you want the students to see (Course Homepage) MUST BE CALLED
    index.html or index.htm

Microsoft Windows 98 Home

If your computer has Windows 98 loaded on it, you can try to Map the Network Drive by following the steps below.  Note:  There is no guarantee that this will work.  If it doesn't work, do not call Tech Support!

  1. Log into the Windows 98 computer using the same username and password that you were given to edit the course webpage.
  2. Once you login to Windows 98, use steps 1, 2, 3 and 7.  Skip steps 4, 5 and 6 because they do not work on Windows 98.

This may or may not work.  Generally the computer must be on the MAE domain in order to make this work.  If you use Windows 98, you are on your own.  Please DO NOT call Tech Support if this does not work.
