Proper Use of the MSDNAA
Software (Microsoft Developers Network Academic Alliance)
10/01/2003 9:30AM
The College of Engineering MIS Department through an agreement with Microsoft
provides Departments within the College with Microsoft software through a
program called MSDNAA. Until now we have never had a clear understanding
as to exactly what this software could be used for. We spent a lot of time
discussing these issues with the College MIS management and staff trying to
resolve what is "Proper Use" of the MSDNAA software and volume
licensing. Here is the best information we can give you about the MSDNAA software and how it can be used in our Department.
- Who is Eligible? - This program provides software to Students,
Staff and Faculty on a case by case basis. You are not granted access
to download software just because you are a member of the Department or
student in our Department. Also, access to download this software is
not granted simply because you have a Gatorlink account. The
license specifically limits the use of this software to non-profit research
and instructional purposes only. Access must be requested through the MSDNAA
online application.
This application must be completed and approved by the College MIS
Department before any access will be granted.
- The purpose of the MSDN Academic Alliance license is to
support the normal academic and research needs of the College, not the
business and administrative functions. Thus, most staff are
prevented from accessing the software available through this license.
- Acceptable Use of the Software - Any software in the MSDNAA list can be used in our Department as long as it is in a
non-profit research or instructional environment. Because the University is a non-profit organization, the software may be loaded and used on all lab computers
as long as the computers are used for research.
- Software acquired from the MSDNAA program may not be shared anyone.
If a student should download a program, it is for that student's use
only. If a Professor downloads software, it may be used on computers
in that Professor's immediate control such as an office computer and
computers located in the Professor's lab. Under no circumstances may
this software be shared with anyone outside the College. This includes
other people who are located off Campus that you are collaborating with
while doing research.
- Students MAY NOT download software and then load it on any Department owned computers.
- Copies of the software downloaded by the Department Computer Administrator MAY NOT be loaded on student owned computers.
In addition, our Department has a policy that Tech Support does not work on
or load software on any student owned computers.
- The software may not be loaded and used on staff computers or any computers that are not involved in research. This means that none of the software in the MSDNAA program may be used for regular Department work i.e. Tech Support can not use Visual Studio to develop custom applications for non-research Department work.
- The software may be loaded on computers used in the classroom (like NEB 109) for instructional use only. There was a question about how the software was used in classroom and was the class intended to teach the students how to use this software (i.e. a C++ or Visual Basic programming class). Before I was given an answer to this question, College MIS had to check to see exactly what was meant by "instructional purposes".
- The software may not be used for any for-profit work such as outside consulting.
- You MAY NOT use MSDNAA software such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP to load
on a newly purchased computer in order to avoid spending money on an
operating system. You must purchase an OS whenever you purchase a new
computer. The MSDNAA software may be used to upgrade computers used in
research and classroom environment.
The College does have the ability to track the usage of this software. They can see how many times the software has been installed and who is using it.
This program is ONLY available to the College of Engineering students. It is NOT a campus wide program.
If you have any questions about the MSDNAA program or how the software can be
used, send your questions to msdnaa@mae.ufl.edu
and we will attempt to get you an answer.
