  1. Problem with Microsoft Outlook
  2. Update your OS often (Windows and Linux)

Problem(s) with Microsoft Outlook

Be careful when it comes to the size of your Outlook mailbox (.pst file).  If this file gets to be about 1.82GB to 2GB in size, Outlook will start to have some serious performance problems and Outlook may shut down.  Make sure you archive old email on a reasonable basis.  Of course, this depends on how much email you receive and keep in your mailbox.

Update your OS frequently (Windows and Linux)

All versions of Windows (98, 2000 and XP) used in our Department and the later versions of Redhat (7.3 and above) have the ability to update your OS online.  The purpose of this is to provide you with the latest patches to the OS to update programs and resolve any security problems that may make your computer vulnerable to hackers.  Please make sure that your OS is always up-to-date so that we can try to avoid having hackers access our computers.

For Windows users, use Internet Explorer.  Click on Tools -> Update to be taken to the Windows Update website for the version of the OS you are using.  Microsoft will notify you when critical updates are available.

For Linux users, there is a round icon on the lower right hand side of your screen.  If the icon is red with a ! in the middle of it, your OS has updates that need to be loaded.  If the icon is blue and has a a(check mark)  in the middle of it, your OS is up to date.  Update: Redhat now charges $60 per year for this service.
